Start a Garden in your Balcony. A Guide.

Author: Eric.

A garden is an excellent addition to any home. Unfortunately, living in a small space such as an apartment in most cities, it remains a dream. But don't lose hope! If you have a balcony, you can set up a great garden in no time. We will give you some great ideas on how to create and sustain a garden on your balcony.

1. Things to grow in your balcony garden

You can nurture any plant that works with your climate on a balcony garden. You may choose which plants to nurture depending on your interests.
Herb gardens are fun. They bring different fragrances to your balcony, and you can pick fresh herbs for your meals.
You can also have a vegetable garden. Some vegetables to plant that are tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, and beets.
Imagine the joy of picking your own veggies to make a salad or put in a soup? So rewarding!
You can also grow fruit such as strawberries, lemons, and blueberries on your balcony garden.
Flowers are great as well. Planting flowers and fruits is a great way to create a pretty and uplifting ecosystem that nurtures your soul and other life such as butterflies, beneficial insects, and birds.

2. How will the weather affect your garden plants?
In India, we get different weather every three or four months. You can rotate plants on your balcony according to the seasons.
In the summer, it's a great time to plant things like tomatoes, carrots, peppers, beets, and lettuce.
Herbs like basil, oregano, sage, and thyme will also thrive. Flowers like Marigold, sunflowers, hibiscus, daffodils, zinnias, and bougainvillea do great in summer.
During monsoon season, you can plant veggies that prefer cooler weather and soil such as beans, broccoli, cucumber, spinach, kale, and lettuce. Flowers such as gul mohur, lotus, monsoon cassia, and indigo flowers are great for monsoon season.
In winter you can still grow some veggies. Try carrots, capsicum, and cauliflowers.
For herbs try chives, thyme, and basil. You can also grow some flowers indoors such as petunias and paper daisies.

3. How to design and organize your balcony garden

There are different ways to organize your balcony garden.
You need to use the one that will help you maximize space or create a great ambiance.
You can create a vertical garden which you do by hanging lots of planters or pots from a trellis.
A great thing with vertical gardens is you can set up a drip irrigation system and cut down on having to water your plants manually.
Make sure you put your vertical garden where it gets enough sunlight because plants need it.
Great plants to grow on vertical gardens are herbs and leafy green veggies. For plants such as tomatoes, and cucumbers, you can place a large pot on the ground and use the trellis as the support they climb up on as they grow.
You can also hang your plants in small pots around your balcony border. Other planters can be hooked on to the balcony railing.
The other option is to have plants in different pots all over the balcony where they can get some light. It does not allow you
to grow a lot of plants but will allow you to nurture a few favorites.

4. Essentials for a balcony garden to thrive

- Sun
Although you can grow anything you like, some other factors will determine what grows in your balcony garden.
Start with sun exposure. How much sunlight does your balcony garden get?
Some plants do not need much sunlight, while others like most herbs require between 4 -6 hours of sunlight each day to thrive.
Pick the plants that will get enough sunlight on your balcony for a prosperous garden.
The location of your balcony will also matter. Balconies on higher levels receive more sunlight than those on the ground level.
If your terrace is mostly shady, it's a great place to plant ferns, begonias, English ivy, and peace lilies.
For a balcony that receives a lot of sun, strawberries, basil, lettuce, and tomatoes are great.
You can also companion plant, which means planting flowers that help each other to thrive. For example, leafy plants can be used to shade plants that do not require lots of sunlight.

- Soil
Soil is another balcony garden essential. It's easy to get good quality soil that can drain well from a gardening supply store or a garden in nearby farms. You can put gardening soil in pots of any size depending on the plant size and growth potential.
You will find help with soil from the people you buy flowers or seeds from for your balcony garden. They can also tell you the best pot size and how much sun each plant needs so you can plant them strategically for great results.

- Gardening equipment
You don't need a lot of tools to grow a garden on your balcony. Get a small trowel to dig through the small pots or planters and a watering can to make it easy for you to water your plants.

You may also get a spray bottle for spraying organic pesticide solution whenever nasty pests like aphids try to attack your veggies or flowers. If you like working in soil with your bare hands, that's fine; but if not, a great pair of gardening gloves are inexpensive and will protect your hands as you work .

- Water and fertilizer
Of course, you will need to water the plants. It's also a good idea to buy some organic fertilizer or compost tea because all plants need some nutritious food to grow properly.

Fertilizer comes in liquid form that you can mix in water, or grainy stuff you can mix in the soil. If you go to a gardening supply place or a plant selling center they will give you ideas on what to use for fertilizer and where to buy it.

5. Starting a balcony garden
To start a garden, you can start with seeds. You will find them in garden supply stores, and they always have instructions on
the back on how to grow them.

Another option is to visit a nursery and buy already germinated seedlings. Nurseries always grow out seeds and sell the seedlings to garden enthusiasts. Buying seedlings from nurseries will save you time and energy so you can just start planting the herbs or veggies in a pot when you get home as opposed to making your own mini-nursery.

As for flowers, you will find them from flower sellers in many roadside flower businesses. Any time you buy a plant or seedling from someone, always ask how to care for it. You can always go back to the same place in case your plant has problems, and they will give you advice on how to tackle them.

6. Tips to help you care for your balcony garden

Plants on your balcony will thrive based on how you care for them. Ideally, to grow a great garden on your balcony, you only need lots of interest and commitment.
If you have a hard time with a plant, you can research online about it or visit your garden supply place for advice.
You will find answers that will help you change any of your negative gardening habits, and your plants will thrive.
Once in a while, you will find pests such as aphids and white flies in your garden.
You can check out garden pest experts for pest solutions.
Another great idea is to use organic pest solutions for your balcony plants. Research on them and try each one until you find one that works.
The most crucial step to having a balcony garden is to start it.
Once you do; take care of the plants by ensuring they get enough sun, water, and fertilizer.
Give the plants a lot of attention and do not be afraid to ask for advice from other gardening enthusiasts, pest control experts and organic farmers. After some trial and error, you will have the garden of your dreams and be an expert gardener yourself. Go for it!

Debate: One Safe Product or Six Toxic ones? 'Jaggi Jasoos' LOTD Breakdown.

One Safe product that can Magically do the job of Six Toxic make-up products!

Read on to know what that Harmless product is.

Left pic is the Original one(Spots/patches on my face look exaggerated because of the angle of natural light falling on my face) and Right one is the 'After' pic.

Remember that i told 'i will Reveal what all i did to achieve that Flawless skin without using any Chemical based Make up products' in THIS Post? Yes, That's what i am going to talk about today.

That clear flawless looking skin like in the picture on the right usually requires: Primer, Foundation, Concealer, Under eye Corrector, Finishing powder and a Finishing spray. Right?

What if you can achieve this look without using these Six Make-up products which are Toxic to both Us and the Environment?

I used Just One Single Digital product: "Adobe Photoshop".

Yes. This Super Popular Digital Photo Editing Software is what i used to Correct all the Imperfections on my facial skin. Many people find it Offensive, and Unethical to use Adobe Photoshop for Skin Enhancement and even i think so too. In fact, many a times it has been a matter of
Controversy regarding those utterly flawless
Models in Magazine photos and Cosmetic brand promotions.

But, sometimes, where Artistic enhancements Beyond Human capability are required to portray a character, like in Film industry, they do it Digitally. Take 'Baahubali' or Shahrukh khan's 'Fan'. In both the films, Lead characters were digitally modified to fit the story. Right?

Digitally Modified Younger Looking Shahrukh khan in 'Fan' Movie:

Now, you might be thinking "Okay...but, you could've done it with Natural Make up products too since you have not done any graphic modifications." Right?

I would like to Remind you that I Live in India. Where it is as hard to Find Natural Make up products as it is to find Water in a Desert. So, instead of Resorting to Chemical Make up to create just one look, i chose one Harmless Digital product to get the job done.

We Millennials are using Digital/Internet Technology to Create Awareness on many Issues in this world and Share a lot of meaningful Videos/Articles through the World Wide Web. As far as i know, Nobody Finds this Offensive. Same way even i felt that opting to go Digitally flawless Sometimes is No Crime when the Intention behind it is not Flawed.

Don't you think it is a Wise decision to take Digital help once in a while than Dumping multiple Toxic Chemicals in to our Earth which Robs it Off it's Life?
Do i get a 'Clean Chit' for this? or Not?

What do You Say? Is Photoshopping for Right Reasons Wrong? Please Proceed with your Debate in the 'Comments' Section below.

Phewww.. Enough of this Serious and Heavy Coversation. :P Here's a Fun Behind the Scene Picture from Jaggi Jasoos LOTD to Lighten your Jammed Senses up. :D

Lyrics from 'Galti se mistake' song in Jagga jasoos movie tweaked to add a humorous touch.
P.S: That is the Ever so Delightful Mr.Bubble, my Friend's darling li'l Daschund pup who was my temporary Home mate featuring in 'Behind the Scenes' Pic. And that's my Sis holding him.

In case you Missed the "Jaggi Jasoos LOTD" inspired from Ranbir kapoor's look in Jagga jasoos Post, Click HERE. And there is Much More Fun in Store inside the Post than what you see in the Image below. ;)

PPS: I Also smeared a little Vapour Organics Siren Lipstick in 'Saucy' to give that natural pinkish hue to my dead looking grey lips. It is much more pink-peach pigmented when applied full on. You can buy it from the Amazon Widget on the Top Right side of the Sidebar of this blog.

My experience at the 'Sukrishi Organic Farm/Food Forest', Bangalore. Part 1 - The Food Forest.

Ever heard of a Food forest? Few weeks ago, I've been to one. And that too in Bangalore!

Yes, I visited the Amazing "Sukrishi Organic Farm" in Nelamangala, Bangalore. Mr. Jayaram, the M.D of the 'Green path Organic state' chain and Ms. Asha, the Marketing manager and also a very good friend of mine, invited me to visit the farm.

At first, i thought 'ok... it would be just another Organic farm among many that already exist. But, i was proved totally Wrong!!!

Once i reached there, what i realised was that it is not a regular commercial farm by any means! but mainly a Primitive, Self sustaining and Biodiversity preserving "Food forest"!!!

As opposed to modern Monoculture, a Food forest needs very little human care and provisions for growth. Because, it houses the 'Biodiverse' environment which provides almost everything the plants/trees need. Awesome right!?

The Sukrishi organic Farm/Food forest which is spread across 40 acres was where the foundational stones of the Green path were laid in 1998. Back then, it was a total Barren Land which no one found useful except Mr. Jayaram sir. Because of his strong determination and efforts, this waste piece of land is now an Alive and Majestic Lush Green Food forest.

Scroll through the pictures for a tour of the Food Forest/Farm and witness the
invaluable experience i had.
..................................................................................

First of all, Meet Mr. Jayaram, a Lawyer in the past by profession, the Man behind all of this. He is the Happiest Man i've ever met! Always smiling and always ready to celebrate even the tiniest thing life has to offer. Love love loooooved him to bits! (And he kept calling me 'Kid' the whole time! :D)

Inspired by his Mother Smt. Nagamma, whom he calls 'Mother of Nature', He started several Eco initiatives in Karnataka. His Aim is to inspire people to adopt an Eco-friendly lifestyle through easily replicable models of sustainability. And after meeting him, I can say for sure that he will succeed. :)

Say Hello to Ms.Asha, the lady because of whom i got to live one whole amazing day in my life! <3 :* She is 'Fun, Energy and Compassion' all wrapped in one piece that anybody will easily fall in love with! <3 and look at those dimples! <3 <3

Aaaand Let's Start the Trip!

We were a bunch of people from different walks of life and we all had a happy colourful welcome with the bougainvillea garlands which i loved so much that i decided to wear it that whole day! :P Because, vivid hot pink bougainvilleas are one of my most favourite flowers ever! <3 :)

And they showered us with loose bougainvilleas too! The Best Welcome I ever had! oh! And we even had an aarthi given which made us feel almost like goddesses! :D But, most importantly, it shows how much they love and respect their guests.

After the lovely welcome session, we walked through these lush green(almost romantic) pathways to enter the Forest.
*Romantic because, the day turned cloudy with thick 'monsoon'y black clouds that made the whole forest look like a movie type romantic setting. :)

The first thing that cought my eyes were a bunch of these lovely white Hibiscus plants. They were of our native Indian variant which, i you are a regular reader, would already know how much i love. <3
If you are New here, please Read: "D.I.Y Ancient Indian hair pack recipe" and "Healthifying and Beautifying Rose-Hibiscus syrup recipe" to know my love for native flowers.

Now, this should definitely remind you of your childhood! right!? Ha... the yum yum yummmmmy sweet and sour Chinna usirikaya/Ari nellikai/phyllanthus acidus, a much lighter and sweeter country variant of  Gooseberry sprinkled with some salt and chilli powder delighted my tastebuds every single day when in season! *drool* *drool*

Sapota/Chikkoo/Sapodilla tree. Not really a fan of this particular fruit because most of the times, i got to have only the hybrid variants which taste lifeless. But, these native Indian fruits looked so beautiful on tree, that they did tempt me a lot because i remember from my childhood memories, how yum they taste.

Press! Reporters from Suddi T.V. were also there to shoot and feature the Farm/Food forest in their channel. Aaaaand i will appear on T.V. for the first time! Yaaayyyy!! A really funny incident happened while shooting. I'll tell you what it was in another post because, then, this already long post will seem endless. :D

The T.V. show anchors and the camera man in work.

What do you think both of them are so eagerly shooting?

THE COCOA FRUIT! Yes! There were Organic Cocoa trees! They use these beans in the Brownies that they serve at their 'Forgotten food' restaurant. I am a regular at this place and trust me, thay taste real good.(Planning to review the restaurant soon!) :)

Asha broke a ripe Cocoa fruit and showed us. Don't you think the inner white segments resemble a Custard apple?

We did not just see the fruit, we ate it too! It tasted like a tangier version of our regular custard apple. Loved it! But, the meat was really thin and less creamy when compared to custard apple's. It was an unique unforgettable taste we got to experience and it definitely leaves you craving for more.

After that, we walked through some more forest pathways and reached..(see the next picture)

This bit of land where they cultivated Non-hybrid, Non-G.M.O and Organic Beans.

Asha plucked a few of them and told us to taste it. I was skeptical at first because i never had it raw. But, oh my.. it was so fresh, juicy and crunchy that i wanted to have atleast 10 more. <3 And because it was Organic, we ate it directly from plant without even washing. :)

And then, all of us walked a little more to reach...(see next picture)

The Rain water Harvest pond which is the main water source that sustains the Oraganic cultivations of this farm.

The worn out mini Open theater/stadium kind of structure in front of the rain water harvest pond. May be we can do some bird watching there...i guess.

And then this Lovely Japanese lady 'Rie Goto' of 'Masala tours'-Bangalore visited the farm. After travelling 180 countries, she decided to settle permanently in Bangalore, India and also adopted an Indian girl who is nearly 25+ now. She even worked with Mother Teresa! She definitely was an amazing woman. <3
*The Masala-tours.com website is in Japanese but has an option to translate it in to english. :)
*Here's her Facebook link.

She bought a packet full of Organic Non-G.M.O Adzuki beans for Jayaram sir.

And also some saplings of the same for the farm.

If you want to learn Organic farming or want to start your own Food Forest, head on to this farm because, they provide training in both! :)
For more information, visit Thegreenpath.in

Hope you all had the same invaluable experience through these pictures like i did on site. And wait, this post is just part 1. There is still part 2 where i show you the Bamboo and Mud cabin for stay and the Canines i met and fell in love with.
